The Fort Lauderdale International Airport is the new home to the nation’s first Food Network Kitchen. Located in the Jet Blue Terminal, the Food Network Kitchen is the only eatery serving hot food in the concourse, and GOOD hot food at that. The general manager of the the Food Network’s business enterprise division, Sergei Kuharsky released this statement, “The dynamic of food and travel has changed, You use to never go in and think about eating in an airport. We are responding to that need.” Hopping on a flight simply for the airport dining, is not something that anyone historically would consider, however with the all star chef created menu, travelers may think twice. Since its’ soft opening on November 8, it has already served 1,500 customers.
The menu is take out and promises organic and sustainable ingredients and the dishes are all inspired by local Florida ingredients and draw on the rich South Florida culture. Items include Cuban Breakfast Burrito, fried pickles with key lime mayo, black beans and rice burger, Florida Shrimp Po’Boy, Salmon Burger with key lime mayo, sweet potato fries with key lime tartar sauce, and of course, the Cuban sandwich. Beverages include café con leche, entwine wine, and locally inspired cocktails made by Lansky’s Run. Not only is the food delicious, but the food network’s commitment to local ingredients is good for local farmers and fisherman as well. Food Network Fans will certainly appreciate the to a tee homage in design to the Food Network test kitchen on television and the design features butcher block bar counter, subway tiling, stainless steel surfaces, and hanging pots and pans. The Food Network could not have chosen a better location for a “test” restaurant as Fort Lauderdale is one of the most hastle free and beautiful airports in South Florida. According to the S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Index, US home prices have risen for the past six months. Chairman of the index committee released this statement regarding the latest numbers, “With six months of consistently rising home prices, it is safe to say that we are now in the midst of a recovery in the housing market.” Further good news was released that the national composite increased 3.6% in the third quarter of this year compared to the same time in 2011. During the month of September, 10 and 20 city composites increased annually by 2.1 percent and 3 percent. Detroit and Washington DC were the only cities to experience a decline and New York reported no change.
13 of the 20 cities reported positive returns, while Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York reported a slight drop in home prices from August to September. Blitzer added that the market enters a seasonally weak period of the year during the holidays and the Case-Shiller indices are not seasonally adjusted. In South Florida, and Fort Lauderdale in particular, we have seen consistent increases in home prices and do not anticipate a slowing during the coming season, since it is the season when international and domestic buyers flock to the warmer climate. If anything, during the period from October to May, witnesses a marked increase in transactions and with the inventory as limited as it is now, we are going to witness even more increases in prices. So you have the extra budget to finally remodel your kitchen, bath, bedroom, or living room, now what? Before hiring a contractor, do yourself and the value of your home a favor and hire a designer to put life to your vision and take the lead with your contractor to make sure your project reaches completion to all your specifications. I recently completed a renovation myself, and used Creative Concepts By Marco, and have referred him to numerous clients for renovations, with incredible results. His work speaks for itself, however if you are reading this and are not in the area, I would encourage you to consult a designer that suits your taste before hiring a contractor. The designer takes the vision and objective to the contractor to execute, and leaves less of the onus on you to interpret to the contractor exactly what you are looking for. There are a number of items to consider on both the part of the designer and contractor that you may not initially have in mind. Here are some of the services that are offered by Marco and some of the reasons that they figure importantly into a renovation.

1.Objectives: Marco uses a pre-planning session to establish client objectives and obtain a vision for the project. Whether you are looking for modern/contemporary or bohemian chic, these objectives and vision are really the work of a creative mind rather than a contractor. In addition, Marco provides project management for out of town clients, from the drafts drawings to the last decorative object.

2.Budget: When working with a contractor alone, you may have caviar taste, but a smoked fish budget. A designer can show you how to achieve a certain look with materials that are within your budget. 3.Materials: Certain materials are worth their weight in design and in value of a home. Marble is always a splurge that pays off, while certain types of tiles may not make the impact that is as noticeable. Your designer will be able to weigh in on what is worth it and what is not in terms of materials and can also suggest alternatives.

4.Design: While you may have a number of magazine images that are in your mind, your designer can make the pages come to life, and also take you to places to choose the items that will really personalize the renovated space. Some designers bring the samples so you do not get completely bogged down in the minutia of a home store and lose your vision.

Renovations increase a home’s value, however, major renovations will not substantially increase a home’s value in relation to other comparable properties in your market, so it is best to consult a Realtor regarding the value of your home on the market “as is” before renovations.
