It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the highly anticipated Fort Lauderdale air show!
Get ready for the roar of fighter jets and planes as the Fort Lauderdale Air Show takes flight May 6th and 7th on the central beach area from Sunrise Boulevard at State Road A1A. Full of aerial performances and ground breaking tricks from the best air squadron teams on the planet, this show is sure to delight thrill-seekers from all over the world.
This year’s headliner is the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, who will mesmerize the crowd with red and white jets that reach speeds of 370 mph. The team plans to have more than 80 members from its base in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan perform jet aerobatics in the show. This talented team has roots in World War II as a bomber squadron, and was re-introduced as a bomber squadron in 1978. The team name Snowbirds is a reference to Canada’s snowy weather and the fact that the squadron’s aircrafts were once painted mostly white.
This year the Fort Lauderdale air show opens at noon with the SOCOM Para-Commandos, which can perform from as low as 2,000 feet above ground level to as high as 13,500 feet above ground. They are especially known for landing on time and on mark before a crowd. Other highlights of the show include the U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper, a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, and Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey. Ground exhibits such as aircraft displays and flight simulators will also be included in the show. On May 6th the show will honor “Hometown Hero” Marine Corps veteran Benjamin Guzman, of Pembroke Pines, who had deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Public beach parking lots, garage, and metered spaces between Oakland Park Boulevard and Southeast 17th Street will be available to the public throughout the show, as well as parking at The Galleria Mall, 2414 E. Sunrise Blvd., for a $20 flat rate.
Tickets for Drop Zone Beach start at $29.50 for adults and $13 for ages 6 to 12. The Flight Line Club VIP section, near Northeast 14th Court, costs $187.50 per day and offers shaded seating, lunch and drinks.
